Abstract

Teacher and students who communicate to have good relationship in teaching and learning process also need to concern the strategies that they used to communicate one another in order to create good learning atmosphere. However, certain people mostly talk spontaneously. In addition, some people say something without noticing the others response. The politeness strategies can be chosen as politeness behavior by teacher to the students as the function of the politeness strategy is to make a good relationship. The aim of this research is to analyze Politeness strategy used by an English teacher and also to find the dominant politeness strategy used by an English teacher. The researcher has chosen English teacher and the third grade student in SMP Islam Nurus Syamsi. This research used passive participant, means that in this reseach the researcher come to the place of the activity, but is not involved in the activity. This research uses qualitative descriptive method to get an obtained data based on the theory of George Yule. The method of collecting data uses metode simak By sudaryanto with three kinds continuance technique, direct observation method, data collection method, and transcibing technique. The methods of analyzing data were the techniques proposed by Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study shows that the total of occurrences is 52 times which comes from 4 sub-strategies. Positive politeness uses 12 times (23%), Negative Politenes uses 5 times (10%), Bald On Record uses 6 times (48%), Off Record 10 times(19%) and say nothing 0 times (0 %). Bald On Record is the most dominant politeness strategy used by the teacher than the other politeness strategy based on the table. The teacher used Bald Record because the teacher want the student to pay attention more to the teacher explaination and to study harder because they will take national examination.
