Abstract

This research is about Javanese woman in Aroma Karsa novel. According to the Javanese cultural, Javanese woman is the woman’s physical and psychological is weaker than a man, and must be protected. Javanese woman always stereotype as a sub-ordinate in family, working in domestic place, and can not make decision for her own life. The objective of this study divided into two, the first to know the representamen meaning in Aroma Karsa novel by Dee Lestari. The second is to describe the representation of Javanese woman in Aroma Karsa novel by Dee Lestari. This research uses semiotic theory with C.S. Peirce’s semiotic model, namely triadic of semiotic that consist representamen, object, and interpretant. The concept in this study divided into five concepts; the theory of semiotic, the theory of semiotic of C.S.Peirce, the theory of representation, the theory of Javanese woman, and the last is the theory of novel. This research is using qualitative method. The type that chosen of qualitative method is textual analysis. Therefore, to complete this research, there are data that divided into two; primary data and secondary data. The primary data is the narration and dialogue in Aroma Karsa novel that contain the characteristic of Javanese woman. The secondary data is the data from some books and journals that related to the stereotype of Javanese woman and characteristic of Javanese woman. The data collection method that used in this research is literature study by reading the novel, then sorting out the narration and dialog that refer to the characteristic of Javanese woman. The data analysis method that uses is triadic of semiotic; representamen, object, and interpretant. This research show that Javanese woman in Aroma Karsa novel is different to the stereotype in society. In this research shows Javanese woman in Aroma Karsa novel has three types representation. Representation of Javanese woman as smart woman, representation of Javanese woman as idealist and hard worker woman, and representation of Javanese woman as graceful woman.
