Abstract

This research analysis of code switching and code mixing which spoken by students of English Lovers Zainul Anwar (ELZAC) in Pondok Pesantren Zainul Anwar Kraksaan. In daily interaction, the students often choose different codes in different situation. The problems of the study are: What are the types of code switching and code mixing spoken by students of English Lovers Zainul Anwar (ELZAC) in Pondok Pesantren Zainul Anwar Kraksaan and the functions of code switching and code mixing spoken by students of English Lovers Zainul Anwar (ELZAC) in Pondok Pesantren Zainul Anwar Kraksaan. There are three types of code switching according to Hoffman, namely tag code-switching, inter-sentential code-switching, and intra-sentential codeswitching and there are three types of code mixing are intra-sentential switching/mixing, intra-lexical code mixing and involving a change of pronounciation. Furthermore, Gumperz state that the functions of code switching, namely quotation, addressee specification, injection, reiteration, message qualification, and personalization or objectification. The method of this study is descriptive-qualitative research because it only attempts to describe the cases that happen in the human life. Then, the dialogue take randomly because there are some cases in using code switching and code mixing in Pondok Pesantren Zainul Anwar Kraksaan. Based on the data that have been collected, the students use the different code in their daily conversations, such as English switched or mixed by Madurese, Indonesia and Javanese. The result of the study show that (1) there are three types of code switching and code mixing spoken by students of English Lovers Zainul Anwar (ELZAC) in Pondok Pesantren Zainul Anwar Kraksaan namely tag code switching, inter-sentential and intra-sentential switching/code mixing. (2) There are five functions of code switching namely quotation, interjection, reiteration, message qualification and addressee specification. The conclusion the types of code switching and code mixing are tag switching about 10 data, inter-sentential switching about 8 data and intra-sentential switching about 10 data. There are five functions of code switching performed by the students. They are quotation about 5 data, addressee specification about 8 data, reiteration about 4 data, injection about 10 data and message qualification about 1 data.
