Abstract

This research analyzed dubbing translation on “UP” movie used by Carl Fredricksen as main character in the movie. The purpose of this study is (1) To describe the techniques used in dubbing translation on “UP” movie, (2) To describe the techniques that dominant used in dubbing translation on “UP” movie and (3) To find out the impact of translation techniques to translation quality in dubbing on “UP” movie. The scope of this research is the dubbing translation on “UP” movie used by Carl Fredricksen as main characters in the movie and the limitation of this research is the translation techniques and the impact of translation techniques to translation quality of readability. The theory on translation techniques was based on Molina & Albir (2002) that has 18 translation techniques and the theory about the translation readability was based on Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono (2012) that the quality assessment covers three points; readability, acceptability and accuracy, this research used readability that influences the readers’ understanding of the content of a translation. This research was qualitative and descriptive. The data collection tecnique was document analysis. The data analysis tecnique used is based on Spradley covering domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, and componential analysis. The translation quality of this research is found by asking the informant as the reader to judge the quality of the dubbing translation that they have been read by giving score that used to find out the information of readability. This research has 512 objective of study and found 11 types of translation techniques by Molina, L. and Albir. They are 1.) Adaptation is 71 (13.87%) data; 2.) Borrowing is 6 (1.17%) data; 3.) Generalization is 6 (1.17%) data; 4.) Linguistics Amplification is 37 (7.23%) data; 5.) Linguistics Compression is 11 (2.15%) data; 6.) Literal Translation is 174 (33.98%) data; 7.) Modulation is 111 (21.68%) data; 8.) Particularization is 2 (0.39%) data; 9.) Reduction is 49 (9.57%) data; 10.) Transposition is 19 (3.71%) data; and 11.) Variation is 26 (5.08%) data. The dominant technique that used is Literal Translation technique that found 174 (33.98%) data. High quality of readability in dubbing translation on “UP” movie is 494 (96.5%) data and found 11 types translation techniques translation used, those are Literal Translation, Modulation, Adaptation, Reduction, Linguistics Amplification, Variation, Transposition, Linguistics Compression, Borrowing, Generalization, and Particularization. Medium readability is 18 (3.5%) data and found 7 translation techniques that used, they are Literal Translation, Modulation, Reduction, Linguistics Amplification, Variation, Transposition, and Borrowing, no data in low readability.
